VIRAL VIDEO LEGEND GARY BROLSMA RETURNS WITH ‘NEW NUMA’ AND $45,000 IN PRIZES FOR OTHER VIRAL ENTHUSIASTS
SADDLEBROOK, NJ – August 28, 2006 – The “Numa Numa” guy is back!
On Sept. 8, 2006, Gary Brolsma, the charming, cherubic star of viral video, will release his second video, “New Numa,” on NewNuma.com. And this time, Numa enthusiasts will have a chance to launch themselves to fame and share in a $45,000 cash prize by submitting their own homemade videos in a contest sponsored by Jaeter Corp. and hosted by YouTube.
If you use the Internet or e-mail at all, chances are some time in the past year you’ve seen or heard of Gary Brolsma. The Saddlebrook resident skyrocketed to unsolicited fame in 2005, when, trying to lift his spirits after the death of his father, Brolsma used his Web cam to film himself lip-syncing to an obscure Romanian pop song. The video was meant to amuse himself and a few friends. But within weeks Internet users charmed by the innocence and ebullience of Brolsma’s performance spread the video around the world. Brolsma became an unintentional icon of the viral video phenomenon.
Sponsored by Jaeter Corp. and with professional production support from Experience Studios in Seattle and BeLive Productions in Minneapolis, Brolsma’s new video features Brolsma and members of his garage band, The Nowadays, lip-syncing to an entirely new song. The creator of the New Numa song is acclaimed producer/DJ Variety Beats under the BeLive Productions label. Chad Russell, a singer/songwriter from Fridley, MN, wrote and performed the song – in Russian this time, instead of Romanian – especially for Brolsma. The new music recaptures the innocence and humor of Brolsma’s original ground-breaking video.
Immediately following the video’s Sept. 8 launch, visitors to the Web site will have the opportunity to submit their own “viral videos” for a chance to win a share of $45,000 in cash prizes. Contestants have six months to video themselves, singing, dancing, lip-syncing and otherwise having fun, or to create their own original cartoons or animations, before the contest closes. Complete contest rules – plus Numa-themed ring tones and merchandise - can be found at www.NewNuma.com.
Just 19 years old when he became a viral video sensation, Brolsma waited months to tell his mother what was going on. Suzanne Brolsma learned of her son’s new fame when she came home from work one afternoon to find the phone ringing and her answering machine full of messages from members of the press. The media attention was overwhelming and despite the immense popularity of the video, the Brolsma family never made a cent from Gary’s fame. Like many lower-income American families, the Brolsmas struggle daily to make ends meet.
But while Brolsma may have found the press attention daunting, it was the enthusiasm, encouragement and affection of his fellow Internet users that inspired him to return with a new video. “I heard from so many people asking when I would do another video,” says Brolsma. “If people can watch this new video, enjoy it and get a laugh out of it, then I’m happy with that.”
“Internet users around the world really embraced Gary and his video,” says James Egge, CEO of Jaeter Corp., who has become a personal friend of the Brolsma family. “It was just so apparent to anyone watching the video that he’s having the time of his life. You just have to laugh with him. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Gary and a ‘New Numa’ to his many fans around the world.”
